AbstractShort thin cylinders can be the basic part of mesoscopic actuators powered by laser tweezers. We demonstrate that micro size birefringent colloidal coins can be positioned translationally and orientationally in advance of the prediction of current the oretical modeling. Circularly polarized laser tweezers keep driving the rotation of the microdisk. Viscous flow between a hard wall and a microdisk excites the disk to an oscillation orbit. These disks can be fabricated via solidification of emulsion drops by tuning temperature or solvent concentration so that molecules in the drop assuming a smectic phase.
